FIRs Filed Against AAP MLAs on Election Eve—Is This the End of Their Political Journey?

First Information Reports (FIRs) against two Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators: Amanatullah Khan of Okhla and Dinesh Mohaniya of Sangam Vihar. Both are incumbent MLAs and are contesting to retain their respective seats in the upcoming polls.

Allegations Against Dinesh Mohaniya

Dinesh Mohaniya, a three-term MLA since 2013, faces allegations of inappropriate conduct during a recent rally in the Sangam Vihar area. A senior police officer reported that a woman accused Mohaniya of making improper gestures towards her, including blowing a flying kiss. The situation escalated when, upon voicing her objections, the woman was allegedly manhandled by individuals associated with Mohaniya. Consequently, an FIR has been lodged against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (BNS), addressing both the alleged misconduct and the subsequent assault.

Charges Against Amanatullah Khan

Amanatullah Khan, serving his second term since 2015, is accused of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). A video circulating on social media purportedly shows Khan involved in a scuffle with police officials. The incident occurred when Khan and over 40 of his supporters were reportedly stopped from campaigning late Tuesday night. In response, an FIR has been registered against Khan at the Jamia Nagar Police Station under sections 223/3/5 of the BNS and section 126 of the Representation of the People Act. These charges pertain to knowingly disobeying an order with criminal intent and violating the MCC.

Political Implications

The timing of these FIRs, coming just a day before the elections, has raised concerns and speculations about potential political motivations. Supporters of the AAP view these actions as attempts to undermine the party's prospects in the polls. On the other hand, opposition parties argue that the law is taking its due course in addressing alleged misconduct by public representatives.

Next Steps

As the legal processes commence, both MLAs are expected to respond to the allegations. The developments add a complex layer to the political landscape of Delhi, with potential implications for the electoral outcomes and the public's perception of the involved parties.
