Betrayed by Promises: Indian Migrants' Harrowing Journeys to the U.S.

Indian migrants have faced the harsh reality of deportation after attempting to enter the United States through unauthorized channels. Many of these individuals were lured by unscrupulous travel agents who promised them a seamless journey to a better life abroad. Instead, they encountered perilous routes, legal challenges, and profound personal losses.
One such individual is Robin Handa, a 27-year-old computer engineer from Ismailabad in Haryana's Kurukshetra district. With aspirations of a prosperous future, Handa's family paid ₹43 lakh to a travel agent who assured them of a swift passage to the U.S. Contrary to these promises, Handa endured a grueling six-month odyssey, traversing multiple countries and even crossing a sea, often enduring days without adequate food. Upon finally reaching the U.S. border, he was apprehended by border patrol agents. He was among 104 Indian migrants deported by U.S. authorities in a recent operation.
Similarly, Harwinder Singh from Punjab's Hoshiarpur district recounted his ordeal after paying ₹42 lakh to a travel agent. He was transported to Brazil and then compelled to undertake an arduous overland journey through Ecuador, Colombia, and Panama. During this trek, he was coerced into paying the remaining fees to the agent, having only partially settled the amount initially. His journey, fraught with dangers, culminated in detention and deportation.
Jagtar Singh, another hopeful migrant from Punjab, sought to reunite with his brother in the U.S. He embarked on a flight from Delhi to Malta on January 11, subsequently being routed through Spain and Mexico via what is colloquially known as the 'dunki' route—a term derived from the Punjabi word for 'donkey', symbolizing the treacherous and clandestine paths taken by migrants. Upon entering the U.S. on January 24, he was promptly apprehended by the U.S. Border Patrol and detained for 11 days before being deported. Reflecting on his experience, Singh lamented, "My dream of building a better life has been shattered and my life has been ruined."
The 'dunki' route refers to a clandestine method of illegal immigration where individuals traverse multiple countries, often enduring perilous conditions, to reach their desired destination. Unscrupulous agents exploit the aspirations of these migrants, charging exorbitant fees with promises of safe passage. However, many migrants find themselves abandoned in foreign lands, facing legal challenges, or subjected to inhumane conditions during their journey.
The recent deportation of 104 Indian migrants underscores the growing concern over illegal immigration and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by fraudulent agents. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security reported that between October 2023 and September 2024, over 1,100 Indian nationals were repatriated. This marks a significant increase in deportations, highlighting the escalating issue of illegal migration from India.
In response to these challenges, Indian authorities have intensified efforts to combat illegal immigration. The Indira Gandhi International Airport Police have apprehended numerous fraudulent agents involved in facilitating illegal migration. These agents often exploit visa-on-arrival facilities in certain countries, orchestrating complex routes that lead migrants through multiple nations before reaching their intended destination.
The plight of these migrants serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with unauthorized travel and the deceptive practices of some travel agents. It underscores the need for increased awareness and stringent measures to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation. Prospective migrants are urged to pursue legal avenues for immigration and remain vigilant against fraudulent schemes that promise easy passage to foreign lands.
As the global community grapples with the complexities of migration, the stories of individuals like Handa, Harwinder, and Jagtar highlight the human cost of illegal immigration and the imperative for comprehensive solutions to address the root causes driving such perilous journeys.
